How dental inlays and onlays work inside the mouth

Inlays and Onlays

When the teeth in the rear of the mouth have decayed, dental inlays and onlays are used to restore them. These are also great alternatives to dental crowns, but this depends on the damage the tooth already has.

The first step of the process for inlays is having an impression of your teeth taken. While this is being created you will get a temporary inlay put in. Once this is finished, the dentist will have an inlay that lines up with your teeth exactly so you don't become uncomfortable once it is in. Inlays protect over the surface of the teeth to make it smooth, this is permanent.

Onlays are going to be created just the same way so they fit like a glove. The main difference between these is what they cover. Inlays are designed to protect in between the cusps of the teeth while onlays are going to cover more area. The type you get will depend on how much damage your teeth already have.
