Dental Veneers are thin, custom made materials placed on the outside of the teeth either for aesthetical or protective purposes. These custom made shells are teeth colored and when placed, it changes the shape, size and color of the teeth, giving it a more appealing appearance. One important factor to note about using veneers is that it is an irreversible process since a small layer of enamel is removed from the teeth in order to fix the veneer.
Dental veneers can be made from either composite or dental porcelain. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory by a technician according to the model given by the dentist. These veneers are later fixed on the teeth by the dentist through a process called bonding. The composite veneers can be either made in a laboratory or can be placed directly on the teeth by the dentist. The composite veneer is bonded to the teeth using material called resin cement. Composite veneers are stronger and they are long lasting than porcelain veneers.
The most important advantage or using veneers is cosmetic. It is one of the most effective ways to fix teeth that is otherwise flawed or unattractive. Veneers can be used on a single tooth or multiple teeth that needs restoration. Teeth that are discoloured or disfigured can be transformed into white and shiny by using veneers. Veneers can fix missing, cracked, broken, chipped or misaligned teeth. Veneers are also useful in filling up the gaps or spaces between teeth.
Dental veneers are effective but they are costly. Maintaining good oral hygiene is important when using veneers since the teeth below could be affected by decay or damage. Porcelain veneers are known to be stain resistant but avoiding certain foods like red wine, coffee and tea are advised. Keep in mind that veneers are not a lasting solution and needs to be replaced after 8-10 years.
